Ceausescu Mansion, Bucharest, Romania, July 2024

I bought online a ticket to see the house where Nicolae Ceausescu lived with his family for a quarter of the century. There is no need to do that if you do not mind waiting 20-30 minutes. A guided tour takes 45 minutes, tours are available in Romanian and English. It says everywhere that “taking photos is strictly prohibited” but visitors do that anyway when the guide is not watching.

The history of the Ceausescu family is well-known. This post is only about the mansion that they built for themselves. The 2-storied house was occupied by 5 человек – Nicolae, his wife Elena, their 2 sons and a daughter. Every family member had their own apartment in the mansion with their own bedroom, office, sitting room and a bathroom.

Some say that the rooms are beautiful and elegant. To me, they looked overdecorated with heavy furniture, dark wooden carved panels, crystal chandeliers and a lot of gild everything.

Elena's dressing area consists of several rooms lined with mirrors and closets filled with her clothes and accessories. She owned over 300 pairs of shoes with matching handbags. All were designed and made specifically for her.
