The only reason why I went to Kranj was its convenient location. It was easy to get to it from Bled and on the following day from Kranj to the airport. But I loved this city at first sight.
My room was at Layer’s Art Residence, in the heart of the old town. This building was one-time home of Kranj native and lifelong resident Leopold Layer (1752-1828), a prolific Slovene painter. It had been transformed into a café, an exhibition and performance venue. On its top floor, there are three apartments that initially were intended for artists who came to participate in events at Layer’s House. They are now available for rent.
I booked the smallest and cheapest apartment out of these three. A spiral staircase led to the floor with the apartments. Inside mine called Backstage, there was another very steep ladder to the bedroom with four single beds. I tried to get a single room in Kranj old town and did not find any at a reasonable price. So I ended up with four beds instead of one for the price of a single room. On the first level, there were a bathroom and living area.
I crisscrossed the old town making sure that I walked all streets of it. Every house was unique and worth taking a photo. Tourists were few, a big difference from the crowded Bled.
Kranj was my last stop in Slovenia. It was chosen because of its location and because I had an extra day to spend before flying out. It turned out to be a lovely place.
From Slovenia, I was going to my hometown, St. Petersburg, Russia to see my relatives and friends.
What a picturesque old town! It looks so as if there were an artist owning each of these houses:) No wonder, with such an impressive background!
It is a truly artistic town. A lovely place to spend half a day.
