Day 3
Day 4
My leg muscles had not completely recovered from the hike on the previous day. The distance to walk on Day 4 was 20 km but the trail was flat. The day was sunny, warm and with lots of sandflies. When the weather was bad, the backpack was lightweight. On a good day like this, most of the clothes were in the backpack making it heavy.
We got up at 6 a.m. and left at 7.30 a.m. I decided to walk slowly so I could enjoy the surrounding natural beauty the most.
According to our usual schedule, we stopped at 10 am for tea/coffee and at 1 pm for lunch. I reached the track end at 3 pm.
From there, we were taken by boat to Mitre Peak hotel in Milford Sound where we stayed our last night.
It turned out well that my friend and I did the 30-km Routeburn first and the 50-km Milford next. The former track is 3 days and the latter is also 3 days of walking, although we were away for 5 days because the first and the last days were spent on traveling to the trail and back. That way, the easier Routeburn track prepared us for the harder Milford track. The total walked distance including the optional trails was 100 km.
Day 5
We breakfasted at the hotel and prepared lunchboxes for the last time. We would eat our sandwiches later on the bus. No more walking today, only a 1.5-hour boat ride in Milford Sound.
It was a bright day and everyone took a lot of photos from the boat.
In the afternoon, we were back to Queenstown where we were spending 2 more nights before flying back to Melbourne.
